Title: The Doctor Will See You Now (5/6)
Fandom: Life on Mars/Doctor Who crossover
Rating: PG
Summary: Doctor and Rose travel to the 70's to see the sights but end up seeing something entirely different from what they'd planned.
Spoilers: Entire Life on Mars (but set sometime post-s1) and early season two Doctor Who
Pairings: Sam/Annie, implied Gene/Sam, Doctor/Rose if you want but nothing really shippy.
Notes: Probably my first non-ship fic. I just got this story that I wanted to tell in my head and well... I told it. One could argue perhaps that I made Sam/Annie shippy but I don't really think so since I, at least in my own opinion, made them very close to canon. I tried to be as faithful as I could to both "realities" when I brought them together
Chapter One | Chapter Two | Chapter Three | Chapter Four | Chapter Five | Chapter Six
Chapter Five: Shattered Ground
Sam hadn’t even thought about the box he’d entered. It was not until he’d stepped inside that he’d realized how bizarre this ship was. It was impossible, but judging from Rose and the Doctor’s secretive smiles, it was also how it was supposed to be. The control room was so incredibly vast and the more he tried to see, the further it seemed to reach. Sam contemplated the size of the ship, the incredible design and how… marvellous it all seemed.
He turned to look at the Doctor, who was leaning against the console. His eyes were serious and his arms folded. “What do you think?”
“It’s…” Sam stayed silent as he searched for a word to describe this, “Impossible.”
“Any questions?” The Doctor asked, looking straight at him.
Sam let his gaze wander around once more. It was unbelievable to say the least, and felt as though there should be some questions, but he found that he didn’t need them answered. This was impossible, but so was waking up in 1973.
“No. Not yet anyway.” He attempted to smile but it seemed to ring false.
Somehow he couldn’t get Gene and Annie’s words out of his head.
You’re leaving us, aren’t you?
Get out of my sight, Tyler.
He felt like Judas.
There was a moment of silence within the TARDIS and Sam couldn’t decide if it was a blessing or curse. It was quiet, still, but he could also feel the other’s worried gazes and that was a bit unnerving. He didn’t understand what he’d done that made them look at him so much. It was almost like they… they knew.
Sam sighed.
Being in 1973 had not only clouded his judgment a bit, but it had also, apparently, made him paranoid.
“Alright, Sam,” The Doctor broke the silence, “Hang on to something – here we go!” He turned to the console and Sam ran over to Rose’s side and grabbed onto the railing, standing right next to her. Rose gave her a warm smile before The Doctor pushed the final button and the ship began to shake violently.
“Is it always this bumpy?” Sam tried to yell over to Rose, trying to shout over the engines but without much success. Rose looked at his direction, indicating that she’d heard that he’d said something but as his gaze locked with hers, she made no sign of having heard what he’d said.
Sam’s grip around the railing tightened and as the ship seemed to land, an excited buzz filled him. Home. He was home.
Without waiting for some kind of statement from the Doctor, Sam rushed to the door, feeling a false sense of excitement fill the void inside. Rose was soon after him as he opened the door and the Doctor followed behind, closing the door behind them.
Sam looked up at the sky, the big blue sky, and then at his surroundings. A wave of relief hit him as he saw the spot where the car had hit him, the pavement, concrete and cars all driving around them. The sound was soothing, comforting.
“This…” He made a few more turns before looking at The Doctor and Rose, “This… Thank you!”
If Sam had been anyone else, he’d hugged them. But instead he started to walk with them, with large steps towards the centre of the city. He felt like a new man. Refreshed. As if he’d awoken from a big sleep.
“What are you going to do now?” Rose asked, looking at him with interest, “Where are you going to go?”
Sam shrugged, ignoring the questions as he had decided to look at the bright side of things. “I don’t know. The hospital, maybe. The car hit me and… I don’t know,” he paused for a moment.
He couldn’t understand why, but it felt like he needed to go to the hospital before anything else. Slowly, without really knowing where he was going, Sam’s distance to the hospital lessened, with The Doctor and Rose behind him.
“We’re just gonna see you’ll be all right and then we’ll go.” The Doctor said, his business like voice speaking from somewhere behind.
They entered the hospital, all three, and for a moment, Sam froze as he took in everything. Rose supposed that looking at the scenery wasn’t the same as actually being in a building. It was almost scary how quickly things changed in only a few thirty years. Rose was about to put a hand on his shoulder, to see if he was still with them, but the second she was about to touch him, he startled back into life and snapped out of it.
With confident steps, Rose and the Doctor observed him going to the desk and ask for… what was he asking for? They couldn’t hear but, soon, Sam walked away from the reception in the direction of the lifts. Casting a glance at the Doctor, Rose followed. As did the Doctor.
The three of them stepped into the lift without a word, silently waiting for the lift to stop. It was silent, almost too silent it seemed to Sam. He shifted uncomfortably several times during the ride and Rose anxiously shared glances with the Doctor. The closer they seemed to be to whatever it was they were looking for, the more anxious Sam seemed to be.
“Are you all right?” Rose finally choked out but got no reply because the lift doors finally opened and Sam was out quicker than Rose thought was humanly possible.
She watched his figure disappear in the distance as he rushed between door and door, pushing up the doors and then closing them just as quickly. Some of the hospital staff came out and glared at him annoyingly. Some even stopped and stared.
Rose looked at the Doctor to see his reaction.
This was very odd.
Without another word, Rose and the Doctor began to run after Sam, who seemed to have disappeared behind a corner.
They were almost rushing past him, but luckily the Doctor halted the minute he saw Sam’s lean figure in the doorway. He stood completely still. He had finally stopped running.
Rose walked up behind him and put a hand on his shoulder, tracing his stare to whatever it was he was looking at. She saw the monitors, heard the beeping and then, finally, she saw Sam’s body, lying there, in the hospital bed, completely still. His mouth was covered in a tube and the monitors were registering his hearth rhythm.
Rose tried to catch a glimpse of Sam’s face.
He looked absolutely devastated.
“I’m sorry,” she heard the Doctor say behind her, “I’m so very sorry.”
Sam took a step forward, almost tripping as he did so. With weak, uncertain steps, he took the final steps towards his hospital bed, his eyes never leaving his body.
Rose could feel the Doctor tense up behind her.
“Whatever you do, don’t touch… the body. Trust me, you don’t wanna do that.”
Sam almost fell to the floor, kneeling by his own beside. His face was a labyrinth, a maze of emotions hiding in his face. His eyes looked blank but there seemed to be so much going on underneath, so many emotions swirling in the depths of his eyes. Rose felt as if she would break in two, watching this torn man.
“H… H… How…?” He looked up at them, looking for answers, his entire essence completely exposed, “How c…. can…?”
“I think you know,” The Doctor said softly, “You’re not just ready to realize it yet. Come on, Sam, let’s go back.”
The Doctor walked to Sam, leaving Rose’s side and reached out his hand, helping the broken man to stand.
Completely shattered, Sam glanced behind him as they left the room, seeing, for the last time, everything he used to be.

Only one chapter left *sniff*

Date: 2007-07-24 05:35 pm (UTC)hehe. He totally belongs in '73, too bad he doesn't seem to realize it though, poor clueless sweetheart.
Oh, I know, it's absolutely horrifying because I just wanna do more and more Life on Mars/Doctor Who crossovers because it's so easy to mix them together and write something good. Oh, how I will miss this story though. *hugs it*
Thank you so much for reading and commenting :D Means loads :D

This, though, seems a tiny bit out of character. The Doctor doesn't usually stick around to see that things are alright; in fact, he usually leaves too early and the consequences come back to bite him in the ass, as in the case of Satellite 5 becoming the Gamestation, or his propelling Harriet Jones out of office, and things like that. So that particular line seems a bit more like Rose than the Doctor.
But otherwise, it was quite a good chapter!

sad and heartwrenching and beautifully written
as soon as he actually stepped into the hospital I realised what he was about to check. Poor Sammy.
what would've happened if he had touched the body?
would he have shattered the time/space continuum kinda like "Don't touch the baby!!" thing, or would he just've slipped into his body there and stayed in like a dreamless coma?
Intersting to think about...
love the last line, and it fits so well with how the show itself ends.
Yup lovely (as always)
I will be sad reading the last chapter... such an awsome fic

Date: 2007-07-27 10:48 am (UTC)I was sort of going for a 'Father's Day' like scenario. Even if it technically wasn't FD, having like... two copies from the same copy (er, does that make sense?) on the same place at the same time, touching, must make it some sort of weak spot in time. Also, The Doc isn't used to having people in coma while they are standing next to him so... I suppose it was also some of 'just to be sure thing' that the Doc said to Sam not to touch the body.
Thank you so much :D *hugs* It will be a sad day today when I post the final bit. *cry* It's been so fun.

Date: 2007-07-27 10:53 am (UTC)but the thing is... it means that in his coma Sam was hurled back in time where he either managed to become corporeal OR steal someoneelse's body. And his 60s timeline and coma-timeline are like entertwined, cause he experiences stuff and such. So the time continuum is already a bit messed up. Hm, it's interesting isn't it?
And yeah, I assume the doctor wouldn't really know in this case cause it's so... weird. But he knows about crossing your own timeline... that it's baaaad.
*cries* it has indeed!
