Title: The Doctor Will See You Now (1/6)
Fandom: Life on Mars/Doctor Who crossover
Rating: PG
Summary: Doctor and Rose travel to the 70's to see the sights but end up seeing something entirely different from what they'd planned.
Spoilers: Entire Life on Mars (but set sometime post-s1) and early season two Doctor Who
Pairings: Sam/Annie, implied Gene/Sam, Doctor/Rose if you want but nothing really shippy.
Notes: Probably my first non-ship fic. I just got this story that I wanted to tell in my head and well... I told it. One could argue perhaps that I made Sam/Annie shippy but I don't really think so since I, at least in my own opinion, made them very close to canon. I tried to be as faithful as I could to both "realities" when I brought them together and well... this is my first crossover fic.

Chapter One / Unexpected Suspects
Rose laughed as she made a twirl in front of the mirror. She looked insane, possibly ridiculous. She had never actually worn outfits like this and had made a point to avoid it, but when the Doctor had said that he was taking her to the 70’s, she thought she'd dress up for the occasion. Despite the 70’s being Rose's least favourite decade when it came to fashion, it was going to be fun.
It was like wearing a costume. The bell-bottomed jeans and the hideous brown shirt were not only like walking around with your own personal entertainment set (all she had to do was look at her clothes and then she'd start laughing) but it was also a little piece of history. Her mum had worn things like these, even though she found it hard to imagine.
There was a knock on the door and Rose spun around as the Doctor opened the door with his customary schoolboy-ish grin. "Are you decent?" he asked, something playful glittering in the corner of his brown eyes.
Rose made a pose. "What do you think?"
The Doctor nodded, with a partly serious expression. "Very good, Rose. You're certainly dressing for the part." The Doctor looked down at his own clothes, which remained the same no matter what century he was in. It was much more comfortable that way and saved heaps of laundry.
Rose smiled. "Well, every once and again one has to make an effort, to spice things up."
The Doctor reached out his arm, which Rose gladly took, and together they walked into the control room of the TARDIS, having just landed with their alien ship. Amongst themselves they spoke of sights they were going to see, things they were going to buy and other general things about the 70’s that they were set on experiencing.
"After you, m'lady," The Doctor said and opened the door in front of Rose's eyes, holding it up for her as she stepped outside.
It was a street and, even though Rose supposed it to be very common, there was just something about it that showed that they had in fact travelled back in time. Every corner seemed sharper and things seemed to be coloured in yellow and brown. Torn posters were still on the brick walls, paled by the sun and there was a small pool of water next to Rose's feet filled with rainwater, or something else. She took a step outside and was happy to be wearing heels, because the TARDIS didn't exactly have a dry cleaning machine.
The Doctor came after her, gazing at the torn posters and the red-yellow bricks. The weather was hot, the sun gazing down upon them from far away, its golden rays spreading out across the planet, warming it up. Rose couldn't help but think how much warmer things were going to become only a matter of thirty years.
"Where are we?" Rose turned to the Doctor.
"Manchester. 1973. Looks a lot more like Leeds though, doesn't it?" The Doctor scratched his chin with a pensive look on his face, "No! It's definitely Manchester. So, Manchester 1973. Do you like it, Rose?"
The Doctor turned to his companion, an excited expression filled with anticipation and it seemed like he was beaming sunshine. Rose, nodded happily.
"Haven't seen much already but..."
Something caught her eye. Something dreadful. Rose turned around and saw, terrified, a corpse lying just next to them, covered in blood. Rose gasped and pulled her hand to her mouth, her teeth biting into her hand to keep herself from screaming. She had never seen a dead body before, at least not this closely before. She glanced up at the Doctor and then back at the body again. What were they going to do? Tell the police? They couldn't just leave him there, surely.
Rose opened her mouth to speak but a loud bang interrupted her. The next thing she knew, she heard loud voices. Quick steps. Within two seconds, they were all surrounded with Manchester's finest, who were raising their pistols at them, deadly certain.
"Hands up where I can see 'em, you scum!" One of them called out with a harsh, accusing voice, aiming more firmly at the Doctor.
Fear gripped Rose as she had never been hold at gunpoint either and slowly she raised her hands to the level of her head. She glanced at the Doctor, his face expressionless and firm. He wasn't amused any more.
"You're not a familiar face," Gene observed, staring fiercely at the frightened teenager in front of him. Gene turned to look in the file, searching for her name, "Are you... Rose Tyler?" At the sound of his surname being uttered, Sam could hear Gene's voice being raised slightly. He shifted as he stood a few metres away, observing the scene.
"You were seen at the scene with the victim's body right next to you," Gene continued and Sam couldn't help but feel slightly impressed. Gene almost sounded like a professional. He stuck to the facts, plain and simple and had yet to throw a punch. "The body covered in blood," he continued, "If that's not evidence enough, I don't know what is."
Gene kept his eyes on the girl, but Sam could sense that the comment was made to him rather than the girl in front of them. The girl, Rose, widened her eyes and something inside Sam's gut flipped.
You could just tell when you were sitting across a murderer, and Rose wasn't one.
"Look, I had no idea that he was there!" Rose said, her body almost trembling, "I swear-"
"Did not see a body covered in blood three feet from where you were standing?! Somehow I find that very hard to believe," Gene snarled.
The room was utterly silent for a moment. Rose was in a clearly distressed state and Sam couldn't blame her. Something was setting Gene off again, something about this case seemed to drive his temper even higher up on angry scale than normal. This girl seemed a bit out of place, a little bit confused and disoriented and Sam could relate.
This entire scene was a freakshow. This... the police station, the 70's, everything... was madness.
"Gov," he spoke up, "a word."
Gene snarled again, rolling his eyes but followed Sam out of the room. Once the door with the 'Lost and Found' sign had been closed, Gene didn't waist a breath.
"What is it now, Wendy? She's not related to you is she? Want me to go easy on her? I'll go as easy on her as a pitbull on a bad day."
Sam sighed. "No, she's not related to me, just... Go easy, all right?" He put his hands on Gene's shoulders and immediately saw the unwary, distrusting, 'you're bloody insane' look enter the DCI's eyes. Gene immediately brushed off his hands and Sam tried to ignore it. "Look, that girl is freaking out in there."
"Because she's done something!" Gene exclaimed and glared at the door, wanting to go back inside and finish the interrogation so that they could have her signed confession by teatime.
“You don’t know that!”
Gene rolled his eyes, again. “Jesus Christ! You seem to believe that every bird that walks in here is Virgin Mary! I know she’s hiding something. I know it in here!” Gene pointed with his index finger on his temple.
Sam shook his head. It was pointless trying to discuss with the Gov. He admitted that she was hiding something, but she wasn’t a murderer. Gene seemed to notice his hesitation:
“What? You believe she’s innocent? Look, she was standing three feet from the body with her boyfriend, in a deserted street and they didn’t see anyone beside themselves. Simple.”
“But the body could’ve been there for hours! We should at least wait for Forensics’ report until we start building up a case against them. Gathering the evidence.”
Gene shook his head now. “You and your sodding evidence.” He went back into ‘Lost and Found’ with Sam following him closely behind.
The room was barely lit; the only source of light was the ancient desk lamp by the tape recorder. Rose stared the lamp, trying to figure out a way to get out of this situation. If she only knew where the Doctor was… Her head snapped in the direction of the door as the officers came back. The larger, grumpy one with a discontented frown on his face and the younger, thinner man with an unreadable face. He seemed nothing more than a shadow, someone that made sure that the older kept himself in check.
If Rose guessed right, he must have a hell of a job. She had never been questioned by the police, the proper police, like this in an interrogation room, but what she did know was that if this cop ever tried this in the 21st century, he’d be at least looking at a lawsuit.
“Look,” Rose started anxiously, trying to find something that could clear her name, “I didn’t do it, I swear. Take my finger prints, run DNA – I never touched that body I swear!”
Sam’s eyes widened. No, it couldn’t… No, absolutely not… It…
He straightened up, leaning forward, trying not to jump to conclusions. “DNA?” he asked, his voice seeming rather forced as he tried to conceal the emotional circus that was running around in his head.
“Yeah,” Rose said, “Like.. Like running my hair through a bunch of chemicals and comput…” Rose glanced up at the Gov and she seemed to stop as the Gov seemed to be torn between looking furious and confused.
The blonde girl lowered her head, her face reddening slightly as Sam had all the evidence that he needed. This girl knew about DNA. She knew about computers, hair fibres and… Sam stopped himself. This was insane.
“DN…” Gene seemed to have trouble getting the words out without shouting, “DNA?” He suddenly turned to Sam, “Is this some fucking joke, Tyler?!” Some of the Gov’s spit landed on Sam’s cheek as his boss’ face had the same colour as a tomato.
The blonde Londoner stared at the two men, her eyes shifting between them like a ball in a tennis match. If possible, she was even more confused than Gene.
To be continued...

Date: 2007-07-12 04:58 pm (UTC)I can't wait to read the next chapters, the characters are all very well made and everything is well written.
Only one thing bothers me, where is the Doctor and why didn't he do anything to prevent Rose from being arrested?

Date: 2007-07-12 05:27 pm (UTC)The Doctor will soon reappear, but I didn't really see him go all Streetstyle!Gangsta when they were arrested. Also, they were sort of surrounded so they could've been hurt while trying to escape.
