I've heard school is extremely educational and to demonstrate this, I'm going to make a list of what I've learned today.

1) All the teachers at my school get together and watch Heroes. And apparently everyone loves it - everyone, except my Spanish teacher that is.

2) Bunch of different Swedish authors and poets and their lives.

... I think that's about it. My other lessons were mostly just discussions. But the first bit of news is what I wanted to share with you. I have a school who LOVES Heroes. I'm certain we'd be able to watch an episode in English class for Shannon (English teacher - apparently other countries don't call their teachers by their first name - do you?) because he likes that kind of stuff and I remember when he asked me if I had downloaded any episodes because he'd missed a few when he was in Ghana.

... I need more season one icons uploaded.

Hah, that's so awesome that your teachers watch Heroes! :D My teachers are all lame, haha.

lol. My teachers are all so awesome. Because everyone are from different cultures (for example my French teacher is from France, Spanish teacher from Spain) and whatnot, there's such a diversity of personalities, experiences and it creates this really harmonious atmosphere that makes each teacher their own individual, there's something special about each of them and that makes school a much more enjoyable experience (LOL, I sound like a brochure).

Sweet :D

And about the first name thing - I remember how odd I thought it was that I had to call all my teachers Mr. This or Mrs. That, in my years spent at an American school. I much prefer the first-name thing, in a mutual respect sorta way. Actually, I barely know what my teachers last names are here now, at my current school. ;P

My teachers are lame too, they don't watch tv and they just roll eyes if we talk about it in class. That's awesome that you call your teachers by their first name! Teachers in France (in High School) don't even like to say it and it's quite a quest to discover their first name :) A funny one though, when we don't find, we invent names that would suit them xD

lol. I'd die if I didn't know my teacher's first name. Seriously. It's like the first thing you say in Sweden: "Hi everyone. I'm Lars and I'm blablabla". Although I can imagine not knowing your teacher's name can be quite... exciting, to try to figure it out and so forth. But still... I think that knowing your teacher's first name is very important to create a harmonious atmosphere in which everyone can feel comfortable. Because if they call you by your first name, then you should be allowed to do the same. Also, I think for some students, seeing a teacher as an individual rather than an object improves their learning because then the whole learning process doesn't feel as forced or mandatory and can make a person aware that it's just not a school subject but can also be used in real life and is something important etc.

... the teacher call you by your first name at least, right?

I agree with you but the notion of respect for adults and professors is really anchored in France. It's very different in Universities but in High School and the school before that, I would have never imagined calling my teacher by his first name and I don't really know why. You just don't do it. I remember one time that a friend of mine was punished to copy something because he had said "Tu" to a teacher instead of a "Vous". Respect before everything...
Teachers call us by our first name until the end of High School, I'm in last year of High School and most of our teachers call us "Mlle Stuff" but they don't say "Mr" to a boy, they just say his last name. They do that because when you are in last year of high school, you're almost 18 and therefore an adult so they owe us the same respect as we owe them (even if that's just how they call us). It's kinda complicated, don't you think? I think that's stupid and I hate it when a teacher calls me by my last name instead of Camille.

I know the French are picky about titles and names and all that (I remember all the times that my French teacher - the one I don't have now *sniff* - corrected us when we used 'tu' instead of 'vous' because in Swedish you don't use the "polite" phrase any more) so I kind of figured as much. I know I'd feel pretty... pretentious if someone called me "Fröken" (which is basically mademoiselle but in Swedish), so I'm glad no one does :P

We call them by their first names too. Like Teacher Teresa or Teacher Celeste. It's cool :D
OMG I wanna go to your school and hug your teachers lol!

You have like a specific title for your teachers? Interesting. For us, talking to a teacher is like talking to your classmate (or at least for me since I tend to get along with adults much more than people in my own age group).

Hehe. I do have very awesome teachers and I'm so thankful about that. Makes learning so much more interesting.

Firstly, it is so awesome that your teachers do that. Mine go out for alcohol (a lot if the amount of times I've seen them at the bar is representative) but I have never heard of the programs that they watch.

As for the name thing, it all depends on who my profs are. I have some that are anal about being called Dr. _____ and get that eye twitch when you call them by their first names. Most of them welcome the first name thing. I think grad students have the luxury of calling them Tom, Beth, etc.

lol. Seeing my teachers drink would be weird (considering apparently 50% of them are not drinking alcohol at all) and I don't know... But then again, I haven't touched a beer or alike at all (I'm not the kind of person that drinks - not because I don't want to, it's just because I haven't had the opportunity - I'm such a girl scout :P)

lol. I'd think teachers who want to be called by their title would be amusing, just because I've never come across such a person.

^____________^ that is so awesome man. and totally LOL worthy.

and no, in (I believe) every other country you have to call teachers (and adults in general) by their last name.

I call my prof. in English by his last name because he is from London (but I guess that is just automatic you know.. )

Totally. I can totally imagine all of them gathering around to watch an episode. They are all so awesome. ♥

Really? I'd die because I'd feel extremely inferior and I'd end up being miserable. I'm so happy no one in Sweden is like that... at least not where I live.

So it's not something he requested - just something you do automatically? Or?

We (our class) just chose to do it because he's from England and it is English class so I guess it just came automatically...plus, he's got an amusing last name...

In my last school we called all our teachers "Mr/Mrs/Ms Surname" but I went to an English school. Now I call them all by their first names, that is, with the exception of Mr DuPriest 'cus he's weird like that.

Haha, I remember talking to my English teacher Clare about Heroes. She hadn't been all that impressed.

Is he actually called DuPriest? :P lol . What an awesome surname.

How many episodes did she see? Did you tell her it gets better towards the end of season one?

That's really his name! XD We spent the whole first day going "Is he French? He doesn't look/sound French. Is he Canadian?" Turns out he's from Colorado. But yeah, totally awesome name. ('Cept when I get whiny in Chemistry and go "Mister DuPriiieeeeest! I don't geeeeet itttt. :(" *facepalm* Let's just say that Wednesday classes that ended at 16:20 weren't my favourite.)

She had finished season one and still didn't like it. She's weird sometimes (and pushes far too much Latin American/Spanish literature at us for my liking. The other group gets to do Russian lit and I'm going "OMGWTF WHY DON'T WE? I'm never going to read any of those otherwise!")

From: [identity profile] aliasagent.livejournal.com
lol. I'd love to have a surname like that. Mine is so pathetically Swedish that I wanna change. DuPriest sounds like a rockband or something :P

I wanna read Russian literature. Sadly, I haven't really started yet. I'm still on the English classics (I LOVE THEM!!! ♥)

Yeah, in the US you would definitely never call a teacher by their first name, unless they told you to, I guess. But through high school it's definitely not normal; college is somewhat different and it depends on the professor.

It's so interesting to learn the normal practices of other countries. I never really thought about that difference before.

Really? Oh man, I'd die. As I mentioned in previous comments I think the first name thing is important - mutual respect and whatnot.

We've started this course called Intercultural communications (or something. Might be International communication, not sure, I've heard both versions) and I just started to think about it. I think it kind of says a bit about the structure of another country, education and basically a bit about the culture as well. (also if I'm gonna go to uni abroad, it might be a good thing to know :P)
