Title: The Doctor Will See You Now (2/6)
Fandom: Life on Mars/Doctor Who crossover
Rating: PG
Summary: Doctor and Rose travel to the 70's to see the sights but end up seeing something entirely different from what they'd planned.
Spoilers: Entire Life on Mars (but set sometime post-s1) and early season two Doctor Who
Pairings: Sam/Annie, implied Gene/Sam, Doctor/Rose if you want but nothing really shippy.
Notes: Probably my first non-ship fic. I just got this story that I wanted to tell in my head and well... I told it. One could argue perhaps that I made Sam/Annie shippy but I don't really think so since I, at least in my own opinion, made them very close to canon. I tried to be as faithful as I could to both "realities" when I brought them together
Chapter One | Chapter Two | Chapter Three | Chapter Four | Chapter Five | Chapter Six

Chapter Two: Innocent until proven guilty

He sat on the floor, his knees by his chest. The Doctor leaned against the dark grey, cold wall, sighing. Suddenly, the door opened and he could Rose’s voice a bit further away. In an instant he was up on his legs and walked to the door. He could hear her groaning and twisting, against whoever was bringing her back to her cell’s hold, and he hoped she wasn’t hurt.

“Rose! Rose!” he called but soon stopped when he realized that there was no use.

She didn’t hear him.

The next sound he heard was the door to Rose’s cell being closed forcefully. The sound echoed in the hallway and it reached inside his cell. The Doctor wished he could see her because not knowing was driving him insane.

He wasn’t too worried for himself, because he could always take the TARDIS and leave with Rose as soon as an opportunity opened, but what he was worried about were these police officers. They didn’t seem very gentle-hearted. In fact, they seemed quite the opposite. The treatment they had been subjected to had been almost been too violent to be necessary and he’d noticed that Rose had been very frightened by it.

There were a couple of steps and suddenly the hatch to his cell was opened quickly and the large, angry man who’d held him at gunpoint stood in front of him.

“Oh, shut up, will you?!” He crooked his head and a discontent frown was on his face as if he was having a headache, “She’s not dying or anything, is she?”

Before the Doctor could answer, the hatch was shut again and he was left alone with his thoughts.

This whole world was… unfriendly, cold and brutal. He wasn’t used to see human like this, under natural circumstances. Here, they were naturally unfriendly and there was no chance to plead to their logic, the Doctor could tell.

He turned his back against the wall, leaning against it and sat down again, sighing.

He had to get himself and Rose out.

Annie was just about to go and search for Sam as Gene stormed through the door, the doors colliding with the wall in a forceful bang, and not close after him was Sam, looking about as grey as an ashtray. A pang of sympathy hit Annie as she saw him. His eyes were expressionless, distant as if he was thousand miles away.

Annie sighed.

He had stop fooling himself. It was doing him no good.

She hated to see him hurt.

She snapped out of it as the Gov passed her desk and she leaned over it, reaching out a small note towards Gene. She had to be at the top of her game, doing the best job she possibly could because if she screwed up… well, then she was screwed. It wasn’t easy being the only girl around, especially when DCI Hunt made such a difference between the sexes.

“Gov, here’s the telephone number you asked for,” she said, leaning back as he took the note and Annie allowed herself to glance at Sam for a second. He saw her but he didn’t react. Things had to be bad. Really bad.

But since this was definitely not the place to confront him, Annie stayed silent.

“Today we arrested two scum,” Gene declared in his certain almost arrogant voice. He leaned back against his desk and looked out over his kingdom. Sam bit his lip as if he was forcing himself not to speak, “They were caught red-handed with their hand stuck in the jam jar. Right next to the body.

“Now we have them in custody and it’s only a matter of time before one of them confesses.”

“Gov…” Apparently Sam couldn’t keep himself any longer, Annie followed him with her eyes as she felt that he was getting out on deep water again, “We don’t know that they did it. This is merely speculation. Just wait for Forensics until we jump to conclusions.”

“You’d like that wouldn’t you, Tyler? You seem to be under the ridiculous notion that everyone who walks in here and carries the surname Tyler is immediately white as a bloody sheet.”

Sam watched them as Gene started laughing and the rest of the office joined him. Except Annie. She wasn’t amused. She was concerned.

After the meeting, Annie walked up to Sam, who seemed to be aiming at breaking a world record in walking as fast as he could towards the door. She grabbed his arm gently and Sam stopped instantly, turning around.

“What is it, Annie?” His eyes were annoyed but his voice was still gentle.

“Are you all right?” She tilted her head closer, her voice low as she didn’t want the others to overhear them. “You seem a little… distant.”

Sam sighed and ran his hand over his face, leaning forward as if he was exhausted. “I…” He looked up, into her eyes and Annie felt her heart skip a beat. Sam was a nice guy, he didn’t deserve this. “I don’t know, Annie. I don’t know…”

Trying to find someway to support him, she put her hand on his shoulder and she started to walk out from the office with him so that they could talk. She could feel Ray’s and Chris’ curious gazes as the door closed behind them.

She made a turn and walked into the first abandoned room she could find. Somehow, it ended up being ‘Lost and Found’. She moved one of the chairs next to the other and sat down. Sam sat down across her on the other, his posture telling her of the weight on his shoulders.

“What’s the matter?” Annie asked, showing her concern but not too much, when he hesitated she added, “Come on, you can trust me.”

She put her hand on his and the hesitation seemed to fade away. Sam sighed once more.

“Is it about the case?” Annie tried and to her relief, Sam nodded.

“The girl… Rose… She…” he tilted his head upwards and stared at the roof, having a difficulty getting the words out, “This is insane,” he whispered under his breath, mostly to himself, “Anyway, she’s… I think she’s like me.”

Annie leaned backwards, her eyes widening slightly, her hand falling off Sam’s. Some fear and a little bit of jealousy began to make itself noticed. “W…What makes you say that?”

Sam, however, seemed to be oblivious to her change of mood. “She… She knows about DNA, Annie! I know it sounds nuts but… DNA with hairs and stuff isn’t invented until 1984! Nine years from now!”

He looked up at her, trying to seek her approval but Annie couldn’t give it to him. He was only setting himself out to get hurt, again.

“Are you sure she isn’t making it up? Just saying anything to get the Gov off her back?” She had to be the voice of reason. He just couldn’t keep winding himself up like this, because then he’d end up being lost in the madness.

Sam shook his head. “No,” but the resolve revealed an uncertainty being planted in his head. “I don’t think she did.”

“Look, Sam,” it was always hard to deny Sam anything, but someone had to, she couldn’t live with herself if he did anything to himself. She had to be honest and follow her heart. “I know you don’t want to be alone but… You know as well as I do… Time travel isn’t possible. She isn’t from the future. She’s just… here. She’s no alien who’s learned to bend time and space. She’s human.

“Sam, listen to me.” She put her hand on his again and tried to find his eyes as he bent his head down. “Despite of what you might think; you’re not alone.”

Sam looked up, found her eyes and a small, sad smile played over his lips. “Thanks Annie,” he said, putting his other hand over hers and squeezed it gently, his voice honest.

“So, spit it out,” Gene leaned over the interrogation table, staring straight at the Doctor, his eyes filled with anger in the dim light. “Who of you did it? You or that pretty girlfriend of yours?” Gene tilted his head towards the door.

At the indication that Rose might be his girlfriend, the Doctor shifted slightly, feeling uncomfortable for the first time during the interrogation started, “She’s not my girlfriend.”

“What is she then? Your little sister?” Disbelief dripped with every word, “Somehow, I find that very unbelievable. Pretty girl like that. You two, alone.”

Gene leaned closer, his face an inch away from the Doctor’s as he tried to scare him, but the Doctor found it hard to be. He’d faced Daleks, Cybermen, things that didn’t even exist in his guy’s nightmares. He held no illusion that this man couldn’t be nasty if he wanted to be, but right now, he was superior.

They were interrupted by the other officer, Sam, the Doctor reckoned his name was, who came into the room carrying a file in his hand.

“Gov,” Sam said and Gene’s head snapped to his, “The autopsy report is back.”

Gene glanced back at the Doctor, who gave him a broad grin, and Gene looked as though his greatest wish in this world was to beat the living crap out of him. Reluctantly, he turned to his partner, barely glancing at the file in his hand.

“And?” Gene spit out harshly.

This was the opening Sam had been waiting for. He opened the file, flipping pages while speaking quickly. “The coroner concluded that the time of death was six hours ago.”

“So?”

“So… do you know any murderers who hang around the corpse for two hours, waiting for the cops to show up?” Sam looked directly into Gene’s eyes, awaiting his verdict.

“Doesn’t mean they didn’t do it. Could just have dumped the body and just as they were about to leave, we nicked them.”

Sam thought for a second but then shook his head. “No. The victim was stabbed, which means that if he’d been moved there would’ve been blood splatter all over the pavement, but the only blood we found was around the body, which means he hadn’t been moved…”

Relief filled the Doctor, as he realized that he and Rose were out of this mess, without resorting to running away. He watched contently as Gene rolled his eyes, aggravated. He turned to the Doctor, his eyes dark. “I’m not letting this one out on the street yet. A bloody menace is what he is.”

The Doctor could not hide the surprise and he turned to look at Sam, who seemed to have a little more sense, but he remained silent. Which was even more surprising.

“Put him back in his cell then,” Sam said gloomily, walking out of the door without a word.

Gene looked after him as if he couldn’t believe his ears.
Love? Hate? Better or worse than the other part?

This series is great! The character voices are spot on and I love the plotline.

I think this line: "and there was no chance to plead to their logic" is the perfect description!

Wonderful chapter.

More soon, yes?

The last bit really gets me 'Gene looked at him as if he couldn't believe his ears.'
I think Gene secretly likes it when Sam interfers, because it stops him from being a total bastard. This is getting better all the time :)

Thank you :D And I can't agree more. The further into the show, I think it's really noticeable how Gene depends on Sam to argue with him and tell him that he's completely bonkers, even if Gene doesn't think he is. *hopes that made sense*
