I absolutely love Jane Austen's novels. I really, really do. They are written so beautifully with sentences that make me so envious of her writing that I don't dare to write anything myself. The sentences are just so beautiful and the books give me such anxiety (if anyone of you were around the first time I had my Austen-flu, you remember that I constantly begged for spoilers to the books I was reading because I got so anxious and torn between which of the suitors I would like or not, because I couldn't decide to like one of them and then the character would choose the other), as any good book should. Now I'm planning on buying a few more books (I already have Mansfield Park) and I can't buy them all because I'm terribly short on money - as always. So I need to select a few out of all those that are available.

[Poll #1124447]

I saw the 2008 adaption of Sense and Sensibility and I fell in love. Again. Although this time, I was as ever torn between Willoughby and Col. Brandon and well... Oh man, those Austen books really make me anxious for some reason. I really want to see the '95 adaption though, because it seems so awesome and with Alan Rickman as Col. Brandon, I'm sure I can appreciate his character even more.

Yay for Austen! :D I'd say all but...I'm going with "Persuasion" in your poll; I love that story a lot, lol(especially towards the end!).

I'm actually in the process of figuring out which Austen book I should re-read---am torn between "Persuasion" and "Sense and Sensibility", especially after seeing the 2008 adaptation. I loved the '95 version so I was a little hesitant with the 2008 adaptation but I liked it, the scenery they used for this adaptation was just breathtaking. And it's a bit more faithful to the novel than the '95 version, which was nice to see. And I loved the Elinor/Edward scenes. Oh, and Alan Rickman as Col. Brandon in the '95 version is amazing. And Kate Winslet. And Emma Thompson...oh, the entire movie, LOL :D

I've only seen the '07 adaption and it makes my heart ache with delicious angst every time because you can feel Anne's feelings when she sees Wentworth again after such a long time. Like her heart leaps out of her, sort of. And you really feel like you can relate to her.

I loved S&S but the problem is that by the end, I had decided that I preferred Willoughby (I bet it was because he was so unbelievably handsome) and not Brandon and so I was sad when she chose Brandon in the end even if I could understand it. But a part of me wanted Willoughby and Marianne to be together. But I think if I saw the '95 adaption, where Col. Brandon is a totally hottie (Alan Rickman is incredibly sexy despite his age), I'd appreciate his character more *is a bit shallow perhaps*

I really wish I could get my hands on the '95 adaption. *sniff*

I love the '07 adaptation (I'm still hunting for the DVD over here...it's so hard to find BBC DVDs over here for some weird reason), I love how it's shot, the music, the scenery, how the camera captures Anne's emotions and reactions to certain situations...I could go on and on and on about it :D It's a pretty adaptation :) But yeah, the book's wonderful, I think from all the Austen heroines, Anne is my favourite *nods*

It makes sense that a lot of people would want Willoughby and Marianne together at the end; I think Willoughby said it himself that they shared the same interest, the same passions, they're both so close in age and everything. They would've been perfect had it not been for certain indiscretions (though I think the '95 version did a better job in conveying Willoughby's regret afterwards of the entire matter---I may be biased though because Greg Wise was just *drools* as Willoughby for me, LOL) *nods* I'm thinking I just might snag this adaptation as soon as it's available on DVD over here :)

I hope you get to see the '95 adaptation at some point, Alan Rickman was quite extraordinary in playing Brandon (Kate Winslet was one lucky girl in that movie! LOL).

I've only read Pride and Prejudice and the beginning of Emma but I voted for all the books. Besides aren't "classics" quite cheap? Here they're ~40 kr a book.

All the classics are cheap, thankfully, so I can buy a lot of books for 200 SEK, if I chose to spend it all on classics, what do you think?

I think that's a brilliant idea!

You haven't seen Alan as Col. Brandon? It's amazing. I have yet to watch the new version. Le sigh. I tried to download it a few days ago but my internet died on me three times. =(

I haven't seen the '95 and that makes me so sad. I have to get my hands on it. I mean, Alan Rickman and Kate Winslet in the same movie?! WHY THE HECK HAVEN'T I SEEN IT BEFORE?!?! :P

*hugs* I hope your internet stops being evil. I've seen all three episodes and it's great. Willoughby is an absolute hottie ;)

I tried picking one of the titles... then I remembered having the same dilemma with the same books (except Persuasion because they didn't have that one) a few years ago at the bookstore. I ended up walking out of there with all three books. Personally Pride and Prejudice will always be my favorite but between the three others I can't really pick.

As for the 95 version, it's the only S&S adaptation I've seen so I'm biased. But I really liked it. Emma Thoimpson and Kate Winslet look a little too old for their characters but if you can get past that then it's wonderful.

You can always pick more than one of those ;) I mean, if I spend my entire gift certificate, then I can probably buy like... five books. If all of them cost 40 SEK. which I think they do. I saw the first two episodes of P&P today and I love it so. The dialogue and scenery is so pretty ♥ Why does humanity have to destroy all the gorgeous nature around? I remember when reading P&P for the first time and I fell asleep twice, but I think I'd appreciate it more if I reread it. I had a phase when I really enjoyed Mansfield Park (because I can really relate to Fanny, as I can relate to Anne and... pretty much every of Jane Austen's characters) so I bought that book then but now I'm torn as to what to choose. There's always Northanger Abbey, I remember seeing the '07 adaption and it was quite nice, but I don't know... how's the novel? Any good?

I can agree about Emma Thompson perhaps but Kate? Wasn't she like... 16 when it was shot? Or eighteen? Oh well, I suppose she's always looked mature for her age. It was funny, when I Saw the '08 version, I saw the dude who played Edward and I just kept on thinking 'man, he's really a lot like Hugh Grant'.

I think I got most of Austen's book now, except Persuasion, Lady Susan and Sanditon. Persuasion I couldn't find when I was looking for it, Lady Susan I haven't read because I'm not a fan of the letter format and Sanditon... well, it was partially written by another lady I think.

I'm thoroughly convinced that people keep making new adaptations of Austen's novels just to show off the beauty of Britain. I always go "Wow" whenever I watch them. With P&P the 1995 version makes the book really come alive. I loved the book before that but after seeing it I could hear and see the characters in my head vividly. One of the great things about that adaptation is that so many of the lines come straight from the book and at the same time the lines are spoken so naturally and not like the actors are reading from a page. Anyway, it's been a 5-6 years since I read Northanger Abbey. I liked it but I thought that the adaptation made the story more vivid somehow with all the passages Catherine was reading.

I think Kate Winslet was 20 or something when she did S&S but like you said, back then she looked mature for her age.
