Some of you may or may not to know this about yours truly but when it comes to music I'm very difficult. I can like individual songs, but it's really hard for me to dig an artist or a band. All over, I have like some individual tracks off someone's CD and I might think that they have a good singing voice, but I can never see myself like... buying an album or more importantly, openly express my admiration for the person's work.
For example, Katy Perry. I think she's absolutely hilarious. At first, I thought she was the spitting image of annoyance and someone who just really wants to be famous. I thought her songs were unnecessarily attention seeking and sort of lame, but as time went on, I began to appreciate it more. I like her now, but other than rocking out to her songs, I can't really picture myself buying her album or count her as one of my favourite artists unless it's on like Facebook or something.
However, to every rule there's an exception. There's this one artist that I really like. An artist whose album I've bought (in fact, I have three and I hope to add more to my collection) and I could almost see myself buy a ridiculous poster (but I abhor any other kind of merchandise). Not because I'm like the ~*greatest fan eveeeer*~ or anything, but because aside from having a voice of a god, there's a lot of charity connected to this person - or at least more than your average musician - and a fairly good sense of humour. However, I don't talk about it that much because of the "crazies" that are among his fans. Not all of them, but enough to make it seem like I don't want to be associated with that crowd (not that I don't have fans of his as friends but you know what I mean).
This artist is, in case you're wondering, Josh Groban.
Slightly embarrassing but whatever. If I had to summarize my really huge fan-phases when it comes to music, I can pretty much put it like this: 6-7: Spice Girls. 7-13 (or something, I can't remember): Britney Spears. 17: Josh Groban.
I like Katy Perry's Hot N Cold, I Kissed A Girl, If You Can Afford Me, Waking Up In Vegas, Ur So Gay etc. and I love Taylor Swift's song Love Story and Beyoncé's If I Were A Boy but I could never really see myself enjoying their music in the long term and there's so much commercial about them and so much... stuff, that I feel like it's almost suffocating or something. They're not people making music but there's so much focus on popularity, attention etc. in their songs. Not that Josh Groban isn't the product of commercialism, but it's just a bit different I think. Somehow.
I guess the difference is that when I'm listening to Josh Groban, it's a calm, soothing style with his music that makes me feel calm and as though I don't really need that really expensive nail polish and it's just generally harmonious. With Katy Perry, I feel a need to buy that lipstick or be a certain way. With most artists there's almost always like a brand associated with them because they are the brand, but if there's a brand that I associate with Josh Groban it's thecrazy soccer mums charity he's done or like his piano skills or the usage of different languages. But that's sort of okay. I like the fact that he sings in a variety of languages and not tries to go limit himself by merely singing in English. Not that I don't love English (you know that I do ♥) but most of the stuff these days are more about like... sex and everything sort of become a cliché in that language while in others it can sort of not turn into that. For example, the usage of 'I Love you' is much easier for me than saying 'Jag älskar dig' (which is the Swedish version). You're overrun with 'I love you's but the 'Jag älskar dig's of the world are much less common and I don't know...
That paragraph is waaay too big but... I don't know. I guess I just felt like I spend so much time talking about TV shows (although this past few weeks I feel as though I've somehow managed to talk about nothing while still making entries) that I wanted to share a bit of music preferences.
I can understand people listening to Death Cab For Cutie or something like that, but... I don't know. In a way, I wish I didn't like Josh Groban because it feels totally embarrassing. But his music is totally awesome so I forgive myself.

Date: 2008-11-30 10:30 pm (UTC)I suppose so. He's very awesome, but it just turns a bit awkward when everyone else says groups like Paramore, Adam Tenstad and other artists and I go like 'Oh Josh Groban' and either they think I'm corny ('cause of You Raise Me Up) or that I'm boring and channelling my inner Il Divo. But I agree, he's awesome.

Date: 2008-11-30 10:32 pm (UTC)One of my favourite songs right now is Mai and... I can't think of the other one. But You Are Loved always makes me a little warm inside. It's just such a beautiful song (although one shouldn't listen to it too much, only when you need to hear it, in my opinion).
