I just(-ish) saw Midsomer Murders and oh, how I love that show. And this episode was particularly funny for some reason. The sarcasm was just pouring in, which was lovely. I think the episode in question was called 'Death and Dust'. I really have to get my hands on those novels which the series are based on. I saw there were two in my local (-ish) library and it will further distract me on my path on reading SWEDISH books. You see, I will fail my Swedish courses if I don't improve and actually read.

Which, Swedish friends or at least Swedish readers, my future Swedish grade is begging you to give me some recommendations on good Swedish books, or at least some that has been translated, because quite frankly, I'm in desperate need of something literature-ish. I tried reading The Devil Wears Prada in Swedish but it's boring me and I've only managed to go to page 40 in my attempts (count them, three). I tried to find the Dexter books alas my library isn't that cool.

Tomorrow, I'll be a training rabbit and work my ass off in the home-gym that we have, also I'll be perhaps watching Supernatural and then maybe some Sarah Connor Chronicles (to see if it's any good) and then perhaps sigh a bit about John Simm and then some about Ellos.se (oh, the clothes that they have there...)

Midsomer is a guilty pleasure of mine and one of my favorite mystery programs. I've seen nearly all of the Troy years and a bit of the episodes featuring Scott. I am in the process of acquiring the series and one day will shell out the money to get the books. Faithful Unto Death is the only one I've read but it was enjoyable, just as much as the episode itself.

Swedish! And I though French was hard to get through.

I think I've seen all of the episodes. I remember Scott vaguely (don't think I liked him much), and Troy I barely remember at all but I remember I loved him, and Jones is absolutely wonderful. I heart him so.

I'll check that book out but I think that the books that they did have were... Death of A Hollow Man and another one which I can't remember its name.

Any particular genres you like? Comedy, drama, mystery, classics? I read The Devil Wears Prada in Swedish, it was so-so but I had no other choice than to read it since it was the only book I brought on the plane.

I don't really see myself as any particular genre lover. As long as the books are written in an enjoyable way, I can read anything. I've read many classics (all of Austen, Brontë... then maybe one more but I can't remember if that's the case) and well... I can read anything as long as it's a joy to read.

Tell me, does the Devil Wears Prada actually become funny? 'Cause after 40 pages, there's not much going on besides (in my opinion) a very boring and typical protagonist who ponders whether or not taking the job at Runaway was a good idea and that first bit with her destroying so much clothes...

Date: 2007-08-01 12:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lostopenwindows.livejournal.com
Well.. The Devil Wears Prada pretty much stays as it is. I didn't find anything funny it the book, it basically about the frustrations of her job and an insane boss. The writing style doesn't improve either so if you didn't like it much yet, chances are that you won't like it more later.

Now onto the book book recommendations...

Dickens is a classic writer who wrote good books (not great, but good). I enjoy reading his books because you don't really have to struggle to get through them.

Another classic book is "Little women" (Unga kvinnor) by Louisa May Alcott. One of the first classic books I read so it stays as one of my favorites.

The ultimate Swedish classics has to be the books by Wilhelm Moberg... which are sort of heavy, but good.

"Allt för min syster" by Jodi Picoult is modern book about a girl who was born only to donate blood, bone marrow etc to her sickly sister and who one day sues her parents for the right to decide about her own body. Excellent characterization and gives you so many different perspectives of the members of the family that it's difficult to side with anyone.

I read "A long way down" (Fallhöjd) by Nick Hornby in English last summer. I liked it a lot. I haven't read the book but as a movie About a boy (Om en pojke) was fantastic. (And it stars Natalie Tena before she was Tonks in OotP!)

That's what I can think of right now, let me know if you want more recommendations. A tip is if you're not limited to reading fiction, is to read history books. There are many well written biographies and historical books, only the story in those books are based on something that was real.

I'll check them out. I started to read 'Allt för min syster' not too long ago, but I stopped because... well, I went from my dad's to my mum's, so I couldn't bring the book with me. A Long Way Down I've read, it was a Christmas present from my sister (I read it in English).

I've read one sort of History book and that was one made about Cleopatra by... Margret George I think her name was. I've read 2/3 parts. It was absolutely fantastic. You can throw more recs at me, if you wanna :D

How's it going with HP?

Hm, I can't think of any particular titles but as for historical subjects to read about...? Right now I'm in a phase of reading Chinese history but earlier this summer I was fascinated by the Tudors. There were a lot of interesting people around that time, so anything about the Tudors I'd recommend.

I've finished DH a few days ago! I wrote a post about 1-2 hours after finishing it, you can find it here: http://users.livejournal.com/_byakko/106520.html#cutid1

There are two things that I didn't think that I could love more than I already did... but I love Neville and his character developement more than ever and DH actually made me a stronger Harry/Luna shipper.

How exactly do you mean 'the Tudors' and stuff? Sorry for being a total brainwaste, but... I'm not sure I know anything about that period.

And how did I miss that, I ask? *headdesk* :P I'm blind.

HL still going strong for me too, although it's not my ultimate OTP.

Ah, the Tudors were a royal family in England that ruled around 1400-1600. Elizabeth I was the last ruler of that family. It was her father Henry the... I can't remember which number, who had five wives, including Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. So many interesting people who were Tudors or related to them, including Mary I (aka Bloody Mary), Mary Queen of Scots, all of Henry's wives... I started reading about Elizabeth I at first, but lately I've found Catherine of Aragon very fascinating.

I think H/L was at it's best in DH, no matter who Harry married in the end. :)

The only time I ever read Swedish books is for Swedish class, but the ones that we did read I actually liked. I'd recommend Candide by Voltaire, Det går an by Carl Jonas Love Almqvist and Herr Arnes penningar by Selma Lagerlöf. They're all fairly short but they're good.

I'll definitely check them out. I was this close to borrow 'Gösta Bärlings saga' from the library, but thinking that the purpose of my reading was to improve my Swedish, something more contemporary might've been a good idea. And I ended up with no book at all :P Besides French ones.

I am not stalking your journal I promise!
*coughs*

Argh, I hate when school forces you to read stuff. then it's never funny.

Someone suggested Wilhelm Moberg, yup, I liked them and read them when I was 11 and very insane. They are heavy but good, especially the first one (I love the musical based on it though so that made me a bit biased *laugh*)

but a contemporary Swedish author whom I actually enjoyed reading is John Ajvide Linqvist. You might have heard of him? He writes totally creepy stuff set in Sweden, stockholm to be exact... I think. Vampires, zombies... yeah. I generally don't read stuff like that but we had his first in the reading circle thing in school and I enjoyed it a lot.
The first one, about a vampire is called "Låt Den Rätte Komma In". It's not usual vampire stuff. Not at all. It like, humanise vampires if you know what I mean. An interesting read!
But I have no idea if you enjoy that kind of book... but it's a suggestion at least ^.~
(I just bought the second on "Hanteringen av Odöda", zombies, but haven't read it)

I myself like fantasy and we have like one good Swedish fantasy author. But I forgot his name. Think the trilogy is called Frihetskrigen. If you read fantasy at all that is.

I doubt Astrid Lindgren counts XD (Bröderna Lejonhjärta owns my soul. Really does)

From: [identity profile] aliasagent.livejournal.com
Oh, stalking is fine :D Me löööööv stalking :D Please keep stalking :D

I haven't read about any of these. Well, of course I've heard of Astrid Lingren (duh! :P) but the others, and not counting William Moberg either. Frihetskrigen? It sounds like one of those fantasy stories you buy for 10 SEK in a gas station, but that's just me.... :P I've lost faith in the fantasy genre in general. It's all about knights from the Middle Ages or some sort of magical land á la Tolkien.

My school isn't forcing me per say, but it's probably wise if I do. 'Cause I have a very distinct feeling that my Swedish teacher will keep a big eye on me next term because she knows about my language problem and will probably be tougher with me than the rest because she knows I need it LOL :P

From: [identity profile] pnr.livejournal.com
hahaha, maybe I will then xD
you seem nice enough to stalk! *laugh*

haha if you would've been a Swede and never heard of dear Astrid one would start to wonder if you have been locked up in a cellar all your life.

Everything fantasy translated to Swedish sounds like you can buy it for 10kr at a gas station XD
I've been a sucker for fantasy since I was a kid but it's stating to get a bit repetitive.
But well, magic land á la Tolkien? That's kinda the definition of fantasy XD
I hardly remember Frihetskrigen... something with dragon like things and for once a prophecy that wasn't what we thought XD (you know "omg it's the main good guy", nope not this time) and err, something with each book being like 100 year later (like book one year 0, book 2 in year 100, and book 3 in year 200) or was it 1000? Oh well, doesn't matter.

But I suggest the vampire book. It's kinda fresh really.

Ah I see. Not very keen on your mother tounge are you? Prefer English? ^.~
I was lucky and kinda had it in my blood I think.

Wohooo! :D

Well, when I say á la Tolkien I sort of mean elves and people called Borin and shooting with bows and arrows and they are on the search for a powerful gem that are being kept by goblins high up in the mountain Gorgul and they have a dragon on their side but the good side have a magical sword and a chosen one that creeps out of the shadows to proclaim his throne. That's basically what every plot is about :P

I had an idea today that I would write a Swedish film script involving vampires. I'm still a bit hyped about it. :D

I consider myself mentally... not Swedish :P I can be a bit patriotic at times but English is definitely the language I use more.

I think I will even go friend you!
omg shock!
unless you say "noooo, not yooou! argh!" and hide under a table

*laugh* yeah... I'm quite tired of the Quest plots.
There are some though that are not "omg lets find the magick doohickey and become kings instead of the lowest of the lowest! Yay!"

I want a fantasy novel where everyone on the good side dies!
I started to write such a book like when I was 13 or something. Came one chapter XD With a girl all cliché with prophecy and crap going on of course. But the first thing I wrote was the epilogue where well, the evil ones prevailed and the prophecy that said she would take a throne or somethign meant a throne in Death's realm and oh lala she died wohoo XD Together with everyone else.
Oh my, it was a good thought but I will probably die if I find the first chapter and re-read XD

Do it! Make the movie! Yay!

heehee, then get out of the country as soon as you can!
I consider myself not human XD I'm still waiting for them to come and take me home.

My reaction: Yay!
Friends are so much fun and I bet we'll get along famously, don't you think? :D

Why don't you rewrite it? I'd read it. Just because I'm sick and wired that way I suppose :D

I start to get all these ideas and I might actually do it, in the end, but I have no idea how to write a script so I'll run by my dad's and borrow his book on the subject I suppose. I mean, Swedish movies can't get any *worse* so... Speaking of, seen the movie Storm? It's REALLY good, considering. Once you sort of get to the end, it's all so incredibly fantastic. Great acting, great plot, directing... (then the fact that a friend of mine is in it has nothing to do with it :P LOL)

Oh, if they do - say hi to Agent Mulder from me :D Or Elvis, depending on where you end up :)
Why should I leave? LOL. I like it here :P Sort of :P

and now you can read all my secret stuff! haha
well err, it's not that secret everything is just flocked automatically ^^;;

why? because if I write anything longer than a well, short story it goes into cliches or something

Swedish movies can't get worse no.
And nope, not seen Storm. I seriously hate everything in Swedish when it comes to movies. I just can't "suspend disbelief". And it just feels stiff and icky. I can't do it XD

I will xD
oh well, if you like it then stay *laugh*

Yay :D Now I have to run to bed. There's Nolia tomorrow and I have to get up early *groan*

Writing = love :D Writing = life

See Storm. It's groundbreaking (for a Swedish movie) even if the beginning's a bit off, it becomes amazing after a while. Go. Rent. Now.

Staying? Oh no, that's an even more terrifying prospect than staying. :P I'm so getting out of this country :P Eventually :P

I'm going in 11 minutes. Forgot I was downloading something *headdesk* Stupid files.

Creative writing as a SUBJECT?! Now, I'm in heaven :D:D:D (maybe I could somehow make my project around a movie script.... :P) And there has to be a drama for beginner's class (I'm a sucker for every type of storytelling and I want to learn them all :D).

Good :D

mmm, sweet downloads XD

yep ^^
an entire year!
mwahaha, the final little project in it was to write a complete short-story. I actually wrote fanfic *laugh* (my teacher was all fascinated by the phenomenon)
Otherwise it was small things like character descriptions, news article, environmental description, weird kinds of describing emotions... you get the drift.

YEs, make your project around a movie script! Sounds very good ^^
Are you allowed to?
As a nature student I had to do something natural science oriented... bleh. Found a nice angle though XD (did a thing on HIV and AIDS)

me too, we should totally have a society like in Star Trek

Date: 2007-08-03 11:23 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aliasagent.livejournal.com
Teachers usually are. Pop-culture is somehow always missed by teachers.
The only thing I really suck at is environmental descriptions. I somehow always think they are beside the point and I just wanna move on with my story :P And news articles... I dunno, I suppose I could do them :P

I'm not sure. Last year my school didn't have a 'you have to have social science in it' (I go a social science line with an emphasise on language and international negotiations) but I suppose I can always say that I'm through the story portraying how minority groups are treated in society or something like that :P

Star Trek? How's things there?

Date: 2007-08-03 11:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pnr.livejournal.com
apparently yeah
(although thankfully my Chemistry teacher had some sense of it and made us play with Star Wars LEGO to my immense delight XD)

environmental descirptions are important though, so it's good to practise
news article was like, to learn how to write that way since it could be useful in fiction too.

*nods* at least that's something.
"Vampires are a minority!"

in Star Trek they have no money. They don't need it anymore. Which then means no povert and starvation etc (they have replicating thingies) And people don't do stuff to get money (like we do today) but to like get intelectual stimulation, better themselves etc. It seems like a nice world.
Oh and there're spaceships! XD

"In fact, they are such a small minority that they don't even EXIST! :D

Cool.

(I can write you know write like 'and the wind whistled through the ghostly white, still leaf-dressed trees' but if I'm suppose to write about how the tree floor looked and describe all the lines there, I'll get bored and stop by 'wooden floor' :P)
