Simon leaned his head back on the chair, closing his eyes and relaxing his mind. Today had been a long day. River wasn't improving, and it was hurting him. Seeing this once brilliant girl, who once was everything and more, being reduced to nothing but pieces of what she once were, made him feel sick. To think that their own government and their own police could do such a terrible thing to such a little girl made him feel... so many things that couldn't be described by words.
"Look at the fireflies," River mumbled, suddenly sitting by Simon's side on the floor, pointing to the empty ceiling. "Aren't they the most surreal? Buzzing, buzzing, flying, flying...."
Simon looked down on his sister, fighting the tears from his eyes. She was never going to get better. But he would keep trying.
"Yes, they are." His eyes lingered on River's and the tragedy was a fact.
He reached for her shoulder, squeezing it gently. River gazed at him sweetly and Simon found himself thinking; 'She's the most beautiful girl in the world'. Suddenly River looked like a little puppy.
"Will you let the fireflies get me?" She asked, timidly.
"I'll keep you safe," Simon whispered, promising.
